News : Burying Our Heads in the Ground
Under EU legislation the UK has to ensure that less than one third of its waste is sent for landfill by 2020. But by that time these sites will have been full for 7 years! At present we bury a massive 80-90% of our waste. We know that at least two thirds of this is recycleable.
The UK ranks as 'relegation fodder' in the EU league of recycling. Currently, the UK recycles only around 11% of that waste that is recycleable, compared to Austria at 64%.
Potentially, the Commercial & Construction Waste Industry needs to address this issue. In spite of many householders and local councils doing an excellent job through recycling and composting, the UK is bottom of the European Recycling league. Domestic waste accounts for less than one quarter of the total UK waste produced. The major contributor to our waste mountain is the sheer volume of unsorted commercial and industrial waste that goes straight to landfill. We are burying huge amounts of wood, cardboard, paper, metals, recyclable plastics and stone, all of which could be used again. It is conservatively estimated that at least two thirds of all we are burying is valuable, and by recycling it we can not only help preserve the worlds resources, but also eek out our landfill capacity.
